The story behind We're Mist

The camera lies. It slices a decisive moment lasting around 100^th of a second and preserves it like a statue. It’s as if we were to stop a cloud from moving, and leave it hanging like cotton in the air.

Inside the Bowen Library splashes of colour on the walls show a different reality. Photographs of longer slices of time reveal that, in a real way, we’re simply mist. The time we spend in any one place is fleeting, and these images capture the strangeness and magic of that perception of time.

The shots are taken in low light, often against bright light. At one point I spent several days in Paris doing this kind of street photography, thinking that if people didn’t like the images they’d be sure I was a fool taking so many blurry photos on purpose.
